This fiscal code is something that every person living in Italy has.
Whenever you try to do something with an official office, they will ask for it. Sometimes even when doing shopping online or trying to open a trading account with some international trades broker for example.
So you should get it at the beginning and carry it with you (or at least a picture of it on your phone).
You’ll need to find the closest office of ‘Agenzia della entrate’ close to where you’re staying.
They will ask you for the following:
- A copy of your passport page
- A copy of the page from your passport with the stamp of your most recent entry in Italy
- A copy of your entry visa (visto di ingresso), if you’re not from a country that’s exempt from needing that.
- They will give you a form to fill-up (the form is in Italian).
You will need to put in the address of where you’re staying in Italy and you address in your home country.
* Under ‘provincia di nascita’ (province in country of birth) you always put ‘EE’. (It means ‘abroad’ / ‘foreign’)
Then you wait for your turn, and a guy will put all of the information to the computer, and give you a printed page with a long code. Keep it. You will need to use it many times.
As for making the copies, the office where I was in had a copy machine, which accepted only coins.
After you get your residency permit you should be able to return there and request to exchange the piece of paper with a plastic card.
